Ten months after an accident that left a 60-year-old Greenlawn man seriously injured, police said they have arrested the driver responsible for the hit-and-run crash.
Michael Charles, 29, of 158 New York Ave., Westbury, was arrested Friday in the hit-and-run that seriously injured the Sunoco gas station employee on Feb. 13 in Huntington.
Suffolk County police said Charles was charged with leaving the scene of an incident without reporting resulting in serious physical injury.
It was not immediately clear what evidence police have to link Charles to the crash scene. Charles faces arraignment Friday in First District Court in Central Islip.
Police said the accident occurred at the Sunoco station at 1888 Jericho Tpke. at about 4:20 p.m. Feb. 13. The victim was identified as Jaffery Syed, 60.
Police could not provide specific information about Syed's recovery on Friday. After the crash, he was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital -- and was admitted in serious condition, according to police.
Syed remained hospitalized for "several months" after the crash, a police spokeswoman said Friday, and now is recovering while staying with family.
Police described the vehicle that struck Syed was a "newer-model" Jeep Grand Cherokee that was either gray or silver and had out-of-state plates.
The driver was attempting to pull out of the station when he struck Syed, police said. The vehicle was last seen headed east on Jericho.
It was not immediately clear if the sport utility vehicle was recovered during the arrest.
