A 21-year-old Shirley man was arrested and charged with drunken driving after a crash late Wednesday that saw a woman airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital, Suffolk County police said.

The crash occurred just before midnight at the intersection of Montauk Highway and Smith Road in Shirley.

Police did not release the identity of the man or the female victim, identified only as a 51-year-old woman. Police said she suffered non-life-threatening injuries -- a broken ankle and rib injuries.

The man was driving a 2012 Nissan sport utility vehicle north on Smith when he collided with the 2001 Nissan Pathfinder, driven by the woman eastbound on Montauk, at 11:52 p.m., police said. Police said the man was taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center with unspecified injuries.

He was later arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, police said. He is scheduled for arraignment Thursday in First District Court in Central Islip.
