A Mattituck woman is under arrest after numerous thefts from vehicles at North Fork farm stands, vineyards and parking lots, police said.
Cheryl Gormez, 50, of 3470 Delmar Drive, is charged with two counts of third-degree identity theft and fourth-degree and fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, Riverhead town police said. Arraignment details were not immediately available.
Riverhead Town police said that an investigation linked Gormez to at least two reported thefts. Investigators are trying to determine if she is involved in other area incidents.
Police said that, at the time of her arrest, Gormez was "found to be in possession of" stolen credit cards belonging to one victim -- and said she'd tried to use one of the cards to make purchases at a Citgo gas station on Osborne Avenue in Riverhead on Oct. 13.
She also was found to be in possession of stolen jewelry belonging to a second victim, police said, and she sold a stolen gold ring at Gold & Diamonds on East Main Street in Riverhead on Oct. 26.
It was not immediately clear how police linked Gormez to the crimes. In most of the incidents, police said pocketbooks and other valuables were removed from unlocked cars.
