Cops: Mount Sinai woman killed after driving car into opposing traffic

A Mount Sinai woman was killed Sunday afternoon after her vehicle crossed over into opposing traffic and collided with another vehicle, Suffolk County police said.

Police said Marylou Pinto, 78, was driving east on North Country Road in Mount Sinai at about 4 p.m. when she apparently veered into the westbound lane near Shore Road.

Her 2007 Kia hit a 1997 Lexus that had been driving west on North Country Road, police said.

The driver of the Lexus, Patricia Vallary, 68, of Mount Sinai, was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of nonlife-threatening injuries, according to police.

Police are conducting an investigation and impounded both vehicles for safety checks. They asked anyone who might have seen the crash to call the Sixth Squad at 631-854-8652 or Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS. Calls will be kept confidential.
