Cops: Newspaper delivery woman fatally struck by drunken driver

A woman was killed early Sunday morning after a man driving while intoxicated hit her as she was delivering newspapers in Hampton Bays, Southampton Town police said.

Police said the woman, Donna Sartori, 56, of Middle Island, was standing near her car and delivering newspapers on Montauk Highway west of Ponquogue Avenue at 4:24 a.m. when she was hit by a 2001 Ford pickup truck driven by Joseph Perez.

Perez, 31, of Aquebogue, had hit a parked car before hitting Sartori and her car, police said.

Sartori was pronounced dead at the scene, while Perez was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead to be treated for injuries deemed not life-threatening.

Police arrested Perez and charged him with driving while intoxicated, but the investigation is continuing. Police ask anyone with information about this crash to contact Southampton Town detectives at 631-702-2230 or Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS.
