Cops: Passenger killed in Dix Hills drunken driving crash

A passenger was killed early Monday on the Northern State Parkway when the drunken and speeding driver of a 2002 Mercedes veered off the roadway and crashed into a tree in Dix Hills, State Police said.

Gabriel A. Herrera-Mina, 26, of Central Islip, a front-seat passenger who was not wearing a seat belt, was critically injured and taken by the Dix Hills Fire Department to Huntington Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. Two other passengers were treated for minor injuries and released.

The driver, Yunior Josue Bonilla, 25, of Brentwood, was arrested on a charge of driving while intoxicated, police said.

Bonilla and his three passengers had been at a nightclub in Westbury before the crash, police said, and witnesses said that Bonilla had been seen "drinking before driving the car."

Senior Investigator Eli Roman of the Brentwood barracks also said Bonilla was using "excessive speed," but did not say exactly how fast he was driving before the crash, just west of Exit 42, Deer Park Road.

The eastbound lanes of the parkway between exits 41 and 42 were closed from 4:51 to 11:54 a.m. as officials investigated the single-car crash.
