A pedestrian who was seriously injured in a Sunday hit-and-run case has been identified as a Central Islip man, Suffolk police said Monday.

Edgar Abrego, 25, was crossing Carleton Avenue at Brightside Avenue in Central Islip when he was struck by a northbound vehicle about 9:25 p.m., police said.

Investigators early Monday had asked for the public's help in identifying the pedestrian, who had head injuries and was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital.

Police did not say how he was identified. But a news release earlier Monday described the victim's clothing: a black T-shirt with a graphic design in the front and back, Buffalo-brand blue jeans, a royal blue belt and gray Sketchers sneakers.

Police urge any witnesses to call the Vehicular Crime Unit at 631-852-6555 or anonymously call Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS.
