Cops probe bathroom attack at Tanger in Riverhead

Police are investigating an attack on a woman in a public bathroom Tuesday at Tanger Outlets in Riverhead.

The 67-year-old victim reported that her attacker must have been hiding in a stall, and that as she was coming out of her stall he pushed her back in, "got behind her, placing one of his arms around her neck, and tried to force her to the floor," Riverhead police said in a news release.

The woman was "screaming for help" when another woman entered the bathroom and then left and "notified personnel at a nearby store" of the attack, police said. Police responded to the 911 call at around noon.

Described as "young looking," slim, clean-shaven and around 5 feet 6 inches to 5 feet 8 inches tall, the man fled on foot toward River Road, with K9 units assisting in a search of the area, police said. He was not found.

Anyone with information about the attack can call Riverhead police at 631-727-4500. Police are urging the witness to call them as well.
