Police are investigating whether a medical condition may have contributed to the cause of a two-car crash Saturday in North Patchogue that left a Middle Island man dead and three others injured.

Suffolk County police said John Bertuzzi was driving a 2008 Kia north on North Ocean Avenue when he crossed over into the southbound lane, striking a 2010 Volkswagen being driven by Louise Cervelli at 5:29 p.m.

Bertuzzi, 72, of Middle Island, was pronounced dead at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue, police said.

Cervelli, 32, of Coram, was in serious condition at Stony Brook University Medical Center Saturday night. Her husband, Garrett, 35, and their 13-month-old son were both taken by ambulance to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center. Garrett Cervelli was being treated for internal injuries and the child was treated for minor injuries and released, police said.

Police are investigating whether a medical condition played a role in the crash. The cars will be impounded for safety checks and the investigation is continuing.
