Cops probe Smithtown, St. James burglaries

Suffolk County police are investigating four home burglaries reported in as many days in Smithtown and St. James, but are not yet sure whether they are all linked.

The crimes took place within a few miles of one another between Oct. 16 and 19, and the burglars made off with jewelry and computer equipment in most of them, police said.

The most recent burglary was reported to have occurred Oct. 19 at a vacant White Avenue home in St. James that was broken into but nothing stolen.

In the three other burglaries in Smithtown -- on Mark Drive, Wadsworth Place and Grassy Pond Drive -- all of which were reported in the early evening on Oct. 16, 17 and 18, thieves made off with jewelry and computer equipment, police said.

In the Smithtown cases, the burglars entered the homes through doors or windows, police said.

The crimes are under investigation, police said.
