A Southampton man was being held in Suffolk County jail Wednesday after he stabbed another man several times, authorities said.

Maxwell Irwin, 22, used a knife to stab a man in a Wiltshire Street home in Southampton Saturday morning, Southampton town police said. When police arrived about 6:40 a.m., the suspect was gone and the victim had to be taken with life-threatening injuries to Southampton Hospital, then to Stony Brook University Hospital, police said.

Southampton Village police and New York state police helped search for the suspect, who was known to the victim, town police said.

About 1 p.m. that day, detectives found Irwin on North Sea Road in Southampton, police said.
