A 17-year-old boy with a bullet wound to the chest remained hospitalized Wednesday morning in serious but stable condition, Suffolk police said.

The teen was found about 3 p.m. Tuesday at Inlet View Path in East Moriches and airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital police said.

Police initially thought it was a robbery but Tuesday night said it was not clear what happened.

The incident was still being investigated by Seventh Precinct detectives.
