Police are looking for a man who tried to sign out a first-grader from a Ridge school but was not authorized to do so.

The man identified himself as "Stevens" when he attempted to sign out the 6-year-old boy at 3:25 p.m. Wednesday, from Ridge Elementary School on Ridge Road, Suffolk County police said in a Friday news release.

The man "was told by personnel at the school that he was not approved to pick up the child," police said in the release. "The man said he would get the child's mother from the car and he did not return. School officials then notified police of the incident."

Police said the man was "wearing a dark blue-hooded sweatshirt with white drawstrings and a small white logo on the left chest, blue jeans and black and silver sneakers."

Seventh Precinct Crime Section officers are investigating.

Anyone with information about the case is urged to call investigators at 631-852-8730 or Suffolk County Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS.
