A wrong-way driver who lost control of his van, crashing head-on into a car, losing a wheel and then crashing into a building in Brentwood late Thursday was arrested and charged with drunken driving, Suffolk County police said.
Carlos Acosta, 37, of 23 Madison Ave., Brentwood, was charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated following the crash on Suffolk Avenue at 11:20 p.m., police said.
Micheline Fortune, 60, of Central Islip, driving the 2006 Chevy HHR hit by Acosta, was transported to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore by East Brentwood Fire Department Ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
Acosta was driving his white 2002 Ford Ecoline van westbound in the eastbound lanes of Suffolk Avenue when he crashed head-on into the Chevy driven by Fortune, police said. The van then lost a wheel, police said, careening out of control and into an appliance store -- causing "extensive damage."
Photos from the scene showed the cinderblock front corner of the building completely knocked out.
Acosta is scheduled for arraignment Friday in First District Court in Central Islip.
