The driver of a car was killed and four passengers seriously injured early Saturday in a crash on Sweet Hollow Road in the Town of Huntington, police said.

Zachary Bernstein, 23, of Massapequa, was killed when the Volkswagen Jetta he was driving slammed into a tree about 3:30 a.m., Suffolk County police said.

A physician's assistant from the Suffolk County Medical Examiner's Office pronounced Bernstein dead at the scene in West Hills.

Passenger Frank Shea, 22 of West Babylon, was flown by medevac helicopter to Stony Brook University Medical Center where he was listed in serious condition, police said.

Cliff Scudlo, 25, suffered a broken pelvis and broken hip; Rory O'Rourke, 25, suffered abdominal injuries and bruises; William End, 22, suffered a torn aortic artery, broken ribs and a bruised lung. All are from Amityville and were listed in serious condition at Huntington Hospital, police said.

"It appears that speed was a factor," said Det. Sgt. Richard Auspaker of the Second Squad. "It's a very narrow road, it's unlighted, and the trees are close to the road."

Auspaker said the men were on the way home after a night out at "various clubs." Whether alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash will be determined after an autopsy, he said.
