Democrats say they won't run against Vecchio

Democratic leaders say they may field no candidate in November against GOP Smithtown Supervisor Patrick Vecchio following his oath-of-office fiasco. Vecchio was reappointed by the town board, but faces a special election in November unless the courts or special state legislation allow him to serve the four-year term he won last fall.

Smithtown Democratic chairman Ed Maher said "the people have spoken," and Vecchio and GOP town board member Lynne Nowick -- who like Vecchio failed to sign an oath card in time -- "should be allowed to serve out their terms." Suffolk Democratic chairman Richard Schaffer said he'd prefer the state bill, but may consider a one-time pass for Vecchio.-- Rick Brand
