The state Department of Transportation said Wednesday it is reviewing an incident in which a contract worker fell from an overpass in West Babylon to the shoulder of the Southern State Parkway.

The accident Tuesday at the Belmont Avenue overpass, Exit 37, is subject to "an internal safety review" according to DOT procedure, the spokeswoman said.

The worker fell to the parkway shoulder from a bridge improvement project at the overpass shortly after 10 a.m., said Suffolk County police and the DOT.

A police helicopter transported him to Stony Brook University Hospital, but neither the DOT nor police had specific information regarding his injuries.

The DOT said the worker was employed by Bove Industries of East Setauket, a heavy construction firm.

A woman answering the phone early Wednesday at the company's office said it would have no comment on the accident.
