Driver dies after car crashes, catches fire

A man seriously hurt when his car crashed into trees and caught fire in Cold Spring Harbor has died from his injuries, Suffolk County police said Wednesday.

The man's name is being withheld pending notification of family, police said.

He was driving a new model Dodge Charger north on Woodbury Road near Hawxhurst Road at about 10:56 p.m. Tuesday when he apparently lost control and crashed into several trees on the side of the road, police said.

Patrol officers responded to 911 calls reporting that the vehicle caught fire and that the driver was found outside the car on Woodbury Road.

Fire officials from the Huntington Fire Department said the blaze spread from the car to a small area of the surrounding woods but was extinguished by 11:45 p.m.

The driver was taken by Cold Spring Harbor Ambulance to Huntington Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:45 a.m. Wednesday.

The investigation is continuing, police said.
