An East Hampton man, who is a registered sex offender, has been arrested on charges of transmitting child pornography, according to officials.

Michael Bonnet, 28, of 29 Cosdrew Lane, was arrested by FBI agents late Wednesday, and ordered held without bail by Magistrate A. Kathleen Tomlinson at the federal court in Central Islip, officials said.

Bonnet was not required to enter a plea. He admitted to FBI agents that he had sent the child porn, and also had about 100 images of child pornography stored on his cellphone, according to a complaint filed by Eastern District prosecutor Allen Bode.

Federal public defender, Randi Chavis, Bonnet's attorney, declined to comment Thursday.

Bonnet sent the pornographic images of young girls over the Internet in February to a person who he thought traded in child pornography, FBI agent Danielle Messineo said in the complaint.

The recipient actually was an undercover FBI agent, Messineo said. Bonnet emailed: "just hoping your not a cop or anything don't need trouble could you maybe send one so I know your not?" Messineo said.

The agent sent Bonnet "a corrupted video file" that could not be opened, and appeared to contain child pornography, but did not, said Messineo. Bonnet, however, then sent the agent actual files containing child pornography, Messineo said.

Bode said that Bonnet, who also uses the name "Bob Jones," is a registered sex offender on probation in Suffolk. In 2008, Bonnet was convicted of sexually abusing a 14-year-old girl, Bode said.

Because of his prior sex offense conviction, Bonnet faces a minimum of 15 years in jail if convicted, officials said.
