A well-known East End architect, accused of possessing child pornography, was released on bail Friday after he met conditions that satisfied a federal magistrate's concerns.

Jay Lockett Sears, 73, of East Quogue, was arrested on Jan. 25, and had been held as a danger to the community.

On Friday in District Court in Central Islip, Sears' sister and brother-in-law, Tonette and David Baris, of Gaithersburg, Md., agreed to put up property worth $250,000 to support Sears' release, and a friend of Sears' agreed he could live with in that person's residence, pending the case's outcome.

Magistrate Kathleen Tomlinson also ordered Sears to be confined the friend's residence except for medical appointments, consultations with his attorneys and court hearings, and to be monitored by an electronic bracelet. Tomlinson barred Sears from having any dealings with children, except in the presence of parents or guardians.

Sears was charged with creating child pornography by taking pictures of children at public events and pasting their faces and his own on pictures of adult pornography.

In addition to his sister, several friends of Sears' were in court to offer him support Friday.

One of them, David Gloverof Yaphank, declined to comment on the charges, but said of Sears: "He's a very decent man . . . I don't believe he's a threat to children."

Sears' attorney, Richard Signorelli of Manhattan, declined to comment afterward, as did Assistant U.S. Attorney Allen Bode. Sears faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted.

An earlier version of this story misidentified a person who was said to have agreed to allow Sears to live at that person's residence while he faces charges.
