A late-morning crash shut down the eastbound Southern State Parkway for nearly two hours Thursday at Exits 33 and 34 in East Farmingdale after a car hit an overpass, ejecting the driver and causing a vehicle pileup, State Police said.
The driver of a Ford Mustang was thrown from the vehicle after it hit the overpass at New Highway, police said.
The victim in the 11:34 a.m. crash was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip with unknown injuries, police said. After that crash, police said, there was a multicar accident involving drivers trying to stop for the first crash. It was not clear how many vehicles were involved in the subsequent pileup or if anyone was injured.
Traffic was diverted onto Route 109 and New Highway, police said. On its website informny.com, the state Department of Transportation said the road was reopened by 1:30 p.m.
