Engineers: Best fix for sewage pipe is $152M tunnel

The fastest - and potentially cheapest - way to replace the deteriorating outfall pipe at Suffolk's largest sewage treatment plant will likely be to dig a 2.6-mile tunnel beneath the Great South Bay, according to engineers hired by the county.

Last week Suffolk officials said construction of a new pipe for the Bergen Point plant would not begin until 2011 at the earliest.
