Two people were killed early Thursday when their SUV hit a pole in Brentwood and burst into flames that thwarted rescuers' efforts to save the occupants, Suffolk police said.

The one-vehicle crash was reported shortly after midnight, and when Officers Vincent Inzirillo and Matthew Rollman arrived, the sport utility vehicle was "fully engulfed in flames" before Brentwood firefighters could put out the blaze, police said. The vehicle was going south on the 200 block of Grand Boulevard when it hit a pole, police said.

The occupants, a man and a woman, were pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Autopsy results were expected to help identify them, police said.

Third Precinct detectives Thursday were pursuing leads from the SUV's California plate and waiting for lab technicians to find a legible vehicle identification number, said Det. Sgt. Patrick Brooks.

"We can't check the VIN number, because the car is toasted," he said.

The VIN is under the front windshield, but the number is also in less obvious spots on the vehicle, a way to deter car thieves from tampering with the number.

The California license plate goes back to a Ford, and while that state does not put the vehicle model on registration records, the SUV appears to be an Expedition or Explorer, Brooks said.

Detectives were trying to reach any witnesses and see if new missing person reports have been filed, he said.

Anyone with information about the crash or the identities of the victims may call detectives at 631-854-8352 or Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS.
