Lindenhurst driver charged with DWI, fleeing after crash with motorbike

A 43-year-old man has been charged with driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident with serious physical injury after a mini-motorcycle rider slammed into his minivan in Lindenhurst, Suffolk County police said Saturday.

The suspect was identified Saturday as Frederick Hoffman, of 35 W. Hoffman Ave., Lindenhurst, who police said fled the scene but was arrested a short time later.

Richard Scheuermann, 19, of Lindenhurst, was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital with a severe leg injury.

A hospital spokesman said Scheuermann is in “serious condition.”

Police said about 10:15 p.m. Friday, Scheuermann was driving a 2013 Apollo mini-motorcycle north on N. Eighth Street in Lindenhurst when his vehicle collided with a 1999 GMC Safari van.

Information from Hoffman’s scheduled arraignment Saturday was unavailable. His next court appearance is Thursday.

The investigation is continuing, police said.
