A 19-year-old from East Islip was hospitalized in critical condition after he was struck by a car Tuesday night while crossing Montauk Highway at Carleton Avenue, police said.

James Burke was crossing Montauk Highway in East Islip at 9:40 p.m. when he was struck by a westbound 2013 Volkswagen driven by Shermane Coonerty, 67, of Babylon, Suffolk County police said.

Coonerty, who was not injured, remained at the scene and was not charged, police said.

Burke was transported to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, where he remained in critical condition Wednesday.

The vehicle was impounded for a safety check and police said the investigation is continuing. Police are asking anyone with information regarding the accident to call Third Squad detectives at 631-854-8352.
