A Centerport woman was charged with a Leandra's Law offense Thursday evening after a witness saw her driving drunk in a parking lot, Suffolk police said.
Police said Jamie Wieser, 45, was seen by a witness driving drunk behind the wheel of a 2014 Volkswagen Passat in the parking lot of 200 Larkfield Road in East Northport about 6 p.m. with her 11-year-old daughter in the car. Second Precinct officers responded to the call and determined Wieser, of Johnson Street, was driving under the influence of alcohol.
Wieser was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated with a child passenger 15-years-old or younger (Leandra's Law) and endangering the welfare of a child.PhotosRecent LI mug shotsDataLI crime stats
Leandra's Law makes it a felony even on first offense to drive drunk or high on drugs with a passenger 15 years of age or younger in the vehicle. The law was named after 11-year-old Leandra Rosado of Manhattan, who died in a car accident on the Henry Hudson Parkway in which the driver, the mother of one of Leandra's friends, was intoxicated.
Wieser will be held at the Fourth Precinct overnight and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Friday.
