A Deer Park man was arrested and charged with drunken driving, leaving the scene of an accident and other offenses after he crashed his 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe into a Newsday delivery truck early Tuesday in Deer Park, police said.
The Newsday driver, whose name was not immediately released, was not hurt in the 1:50 a.m. crash on Long Island Avenue -- which was witnessed by police officers, Suffolk County police said.
Officers identified Kaleel Felder, 22, as the driver of the Santa Fe and said that, as they approached his vehicle to take a report, he fled southbound on Carlls Path before crashing into a tree. He was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip, where he was treated for minor head injuries, police said.
Police said a female passenger in the Santa Fe also was treated for minor injuries.
Police said Felder was headed east on Long Island Avenue and crashed into the back of the Newsday truck when it slowed to turn into a 7-Eleven store. The officers, who were nearby, witnessed the crash, police said.
Felder was charged with driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident with property damage, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and unlawful fleeing of a police officer.
He also was issued summonses for reckless driving and speeding, police said.
His vehicle was seized.
Police said Felder was held at the First Precinct and faces arraignment Tuesday in First District Court in Central Islip.
