A Kings Park man was arrested on a drunken driving charge after he accidentally struck a co-worker with a pickup truck Wednesday morning in Fort Salonga, leaving the victim seriously injured, Suffolk police said.

Kip Beermann, 52, of 363 Meadow Rd., and Kevin Schmidt, 47, of Setauket, who are both employees of Kings Park Contracting, were working in a parking lot off Meadow Glen Lane when Beermann struck Schmidt with a 2001 Ford at 5:50 a.m., police said.

Schmidt was standing near a trailer when he was struck.

He was taken to St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown where he was treated for serious injuries, police said.

Det. Sgt. Terence Mawn said Beermann failed a field sobriety test. "This is just an unfortunate incident, which resulted in serious injuries to one of the parties," Mawn said.

Beermann was charged with driving while intoxicated and is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday at First District Court in Central Islip.
