It was the landlady who cleaned out the apartment, stealing cash and jewelry, Suffolk police said.
Christine Georghakis, 45, of Johnson Street, Commack, is under arrest, charged with second-degree burglary after her tenant reported the theft to officers on Friday, police said.
Georghakis, owner of the house, was arrested Saturday after an investigation. Police said the tenant, who rents a basement apartment, reported the theft -- but they said officers found no sign of an actual break-in at the premises.
During the investigation, police said, Georghakis -- who also uses her married name, Christine Matarazzo -- told Fourth Squad detectives she used a key to gain entry to the apartment. Police said Georghakis said she "stole cash and jewelry that belonged to the victim."
Police said she had previously been arrested in a "similar crime" but did not elaborate.
It was not known how much money was stolen.
Anyone who may have previously rented from Georghakis should contact detectives at 631-854-8552, police said.
Georghakis was arraigned Tuesday and ordered held on $5,000 bond.
