Man accused of robbing church poor boxes

Suffolk County Police arrested a Lindenhurst man Friday night, after he allegedly stole cash from the poor boxes in a local Catholic church.

Police officers had been monitoring surveillance video at Our Lady of Perpetual Help R.C. Church, at 210 South Wellwood Ave., after several previous thefts.

About 9 p.m. Friday, the officers saw a man later identified as Leonard Degaetano, 43, using a wirelike object as a hook to remove cash from the boxes.

Degaetano tried to flee, but officers caught up with him and made the arrest. He is charged with burglary 3rd degree and possession of burglar's tools. He was also charged with burglary 3rd degree for a previous theft in the church.

The investigation is continuing.
