A man has been charged with setting a fire last year under his bed and locking up his roommate in the burning room, Southampton Town police said Friday.

Kehare Hawkins, 21, was arrested Thursday and held on a $25,000 bail at Suffolk County jail after allegedly setting the Aug. 10 fire in the Water Mill home where he was living.

He had an argument with others living at the Montauk Highway home, police said, and afterward, about 11:30 p.m., he filled a shampoo bottle with a flammable liquid and lit it by using some bandage wrappings.

He left the bedroom and locked his roommate inside, police said. No injuries were reported, police said, but the flames burned part of the bed and carpet.

Hawkins, now a Brentwood resident, was charged with third-degree arson.
