Suffolk County police arrested a Centereach man accused in a string of burglaries as he climbed out of the window of a Blue Point home on Sunday afternoon, authorities said.

Police arrested William Steifer, 29, after they arrived at a home on Park Street in Blue Point in response to a 911 call reporting a burglary just before 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

Steifer was caught as he climbed from a rear window of the home by Officer Michael Coyne and an off-duty officer, Steven Niggemeier, police said.

Police said they determined that Steifer also had burglarized homes on Handsome Avenue in Sayville, Tide Court in Oakdale and Singingwood Lane in Poquott.

Steifer was charged with four counts of second-degree burglary, criminal possession of burglar's tools and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. Police said he also had an outstanding New York State parole warrant.

He was scheduled to be arraigned on Monday at First District Court in Central Islip.
