Seventh Squad detectives are investigating the shooting of a man in Mastic Beach late Wednesday, Suffolk County police said.

The man, 26, told police he was shot by an "unknown" subject at about 8:30 p.m. near Huntington Drive, a police spokesman said.

A friend then took the shooting victim to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue, where he was treated and released, police said.

Fifth Precinct officers went to the hospital at 10:35 p.m., in response to a call about a man with a gunshot wound, the spokeswoman said.

The case was then turned over to the Seventh Precinct, which covers Mastic Beach.
