Cops: Drunken driver critically injures Wyandanch cyclist

A bicyclist was critically injured after a drunken driver hit him in Wyandanch early Saturday, police said.

Suffolk County police said Marion Johnson, 63, of Roosevelt, was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Malibu north on Straight Path near Parkway Boulevard when he hit Ishmeil Thomas, who was riding his bicycle on there at 1:27 a.m.

Thomas, 36, of Wyandanch, was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip, where he was being treated for multiple injuries. He is listed in critical condition.

Johnson was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated and his vehicle was impounded for a safety check. He is slated to be arraigned Saturday at First District Court in Central Islip.

The incident is under investigation by the Vehicular Crime Unit detectives. Anyone who may have witnessed or has information on this crash is asked to call the Vehicular Crime Unit at 631-852-6555 or anonymously call Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.
