A medic with the Dix Hills Fire Department was assaulted early Sunday as he responded to a call for medical assistance on the side of the Northern State Parkway, according to the department.

Robert Fling, first assistant chief of the department, said the medic, whom he did not name, responded to a call for medical assistance about 3 a.m. on the westbound Northern State Parkway near Wolf Hill Road in Huntington.

When the medic arrived, he found a "severely intoxicated gentleman" on the side of the road. As he tried to attend him, Fling said, the man struck the medic.

The medic, who was alone, retreated to his vehicle and radioed for help, Fling said. The medic refused medical attention, Fling said. The department transported the man, who also was not named, to Plainview Hospital for evaluation, accompanied by State Police.

A state police spokesman did not immediately return a call for comment on Sunday.
