A Port Jefferson woman has been charged with leaving her 6-year-old son home alone for more than 16 hours while she was on a date with a man, Suffolk County police said.

Melissa Weiner, 31, of 129 Windward Dr., was charged with endangering the welfare of a child and will be arraigned Saturday at First District Court in Central Islip.

The boy stopped a Port Jefferson Village constable at about 12:25 p.m. Friday and told him he was home alone, according to police.

Officers from Suffolk's Sixth Precinct Crime Section responded to the scene and determined the boy had been left home alone since 8 p.m. on Thursday, police said.

After learning that Suffolk police had removed the boy from the home, Weiner called the Sixth Precinct in Selden and turned herself in Friday afternoon, a Crime Section officer said.

Weiner told police she had spent the night visiting a man in Dix Hills, the officer said.
