Lindsay Lohan's father, Michael Lohan, was arrested Monday in Suffolk and charged with violating an order of protection, police said.

Lohan, 49, of Southampton, was charged by Suffolk police with second-degree contempt, a misdemeanor, police said.

Suffolk police declined to elaborate on what led to the order of protection violation charge against Lohan. Lindsay Lohan's father has a long history of legal conflicts.

He was released from prison in 2007 after serving time for attempted assault and driving while intoxicated.

His actress daughter has been estranged from him for several years.

It was not clear Monday night whether Michael Lohan remained in custody after his arrest.
