A motorcycle driver from Bay Shore was killed Wednesday when he passed several vehicles stopped in front of him on the entrance to the Southern State Parkway but crashed into a Chevrolet Malibu, State Police said.
The accident occurred as Philip Hittel, 48, was riding on his Harley-Davidson around 8:15 a.m. on the entrance ramp to the Parkway, heading west from Bay Shore Road, authorities said.
Hittel passed several vehicles in front of him that were stopping to merge onto the Southern State Parkway in Bay Shore when he struck the rear of the Malibu, police said. He was thrown from the motorcycle onto the lanes of the parkway, authorities said.
Hittel was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip where he died from his injuries a short time later. No other injuries were reported, police said.
The crash forced the closure of the westbound section of the Southern State Parkway for several hours on Wednesday, according to the New York State Department of Transportation. The DOT said the road was reopened just before 12:30 p.m.
Witnesses to the crash are asked to contact State Police at 631-756-3300.
