Motorists can expect some nighttime lane closures and lane shifts starting Sunday because of a paving project on Flanders Road in Southampton Town, a state agency said.
Construction will take place Sunday through Thursday, between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. between Oak Avenue and the traffic circle, for about two weeks, weather permitting, according to a Thursday news release from the state Department of Transportation.
A single travel lane will be closed in either the northbound or southbound directions but lanes will be shifted to allow a single northbound and southbound travel lane to remain open during construction, according to the release.
The lane closures and restrictions are in order to complete a $5.2 million paving project for 7 miles of Flanders Road, or Route 24, between County Road 63 (Lake Avenue) and Old Riverhead Road.
To minimize the impact on residents, the last 1.6-mile section of the project is being performed at night, the agency said. Local officials, businesses, and emergency service providers have been notified.
