Officer injured in utility truck hit-run identified
The Suffolk County police officer seriously injured in Huntington when he was struck by storm debris was identified yesterday as Officer Tim Tonkin, police said Monday.
Tonkin, of the Second Precinct, suffered a separated shoulder and an eye injury, police said. He was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital in serious condition Sunday night.
Tonkin received the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission medal for heroism in 2009. He was honored for pulling a 35-year-old man from an SUV that was submerged about 60 feet from the boat ramp at Billy Joel Park in Cold Spring Harbor in October 2008.
The accident occurred on Greenlawn Road east of Hampton Court about 6:20 p.m.
A 911 caller who reported the crash said the vehicle that hit Tonkin was a utility truck -- and said the driver, who did not stop, may not have realized the officer was struck, police said. Police said Tonkin, who was on routine patrol, was standing outside his vehicle.
Police said Tonkin was "struck by an object, possibly a branch or piece of equipment, on a passing utility truck."
Investigators said anyone with information regarding the accident could call the Second Squad at 631-854-8252.
