Officials: East Islip woman drives SUV into pool

An East Islip woman accidentally hit the gas instead of the brake and drove a sport utility vehicle past the end of her driveway and into her backyard in-ground swimming pool Tuesday afternoon, officials said.

The unidentified woman was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, officials said.

The front end of her Nissan Pathfinder went into the pool on Champlin Avenue, where it was about 4 feet deep, East Islip Assistant Fire Chief Keith Villano said. The pool had apparently not been in use for some time, Villano said, and contained only about a foot of water.

Suffolk County police said the driver was not charged.
