A man was found on fire on the front lawn of a burning house Tuesday night when firefighters and police arrived, officials said.
"We were activated for an outside fire at 8:20 p.m.," said Debbie Tunjian, a spokeswoman for the Middle Island Fire department. "Just before we arrived on the scene, we were told there was a person on fire."
Neighbors were able to extinguish the fire on the adult male as they arrived at the home on Half Mile Road, she said, and Middle Island Fire Department ambulance first responders began treating him, Tunjian said.
The man was taken by fire department ambulance to the grounds of the nearby Middle Island Elementary School, where a helicopter landed and then took him to Stony Brook University Hospital, Tunjian said.
No information was immediately available concerning his identity or condition.
About 60 firefighters from the Middle Island, Miller Place, Coram and Ridge fire departments responded and extinguished the fire, using about 12 pieces of fire equipment, but the one-story ranch style home was badly damaged, Tunjian said.
There were no other injuries, she said.
The Suffolk County Arson Squad and the fire marshal's office are investigating the fire.
No information was immediately released as to a possible cause of the fire.
