Police: Man dies, two hurt, in Calverton car crash
A motorist was killed and two others injured in a two-car accident Friday morning at a busy Calverton intersection, Riverhead Town police said.
The roadways were clear and dry at the site of the 10:02 a.m. accident at the corner of Routes 25 and 25A, and there was no indication of any link to this week's nor'easter or the preceding storm Sandy, police said.
Riverhead Town Police Lt. Robert Peeker said the vehicles in the crash were a 2011 Honda Accord and a 1995 GMC Yukon sport utility vehicle, and it was the Honda driver, a man, who died in the accident. The driver was later identified as Joseph Amodemo Jr., 66, of Wading River.
The Yukon's driver, Meghan Campbell, 20, was taken for treatment to the Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, and her male passenger, Chris Zullo, 25, was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital, police said. Zullo sustained head injuries, police said. His condition was not known. Campbell's injuries were not life threatening, police said.
Traffic at the intersection was halted for several hours, and the accident scene was cleared around 1 p.m., police said.
Riverhead police are urging anyone with information about the accident to call them at 727-4500, ext. 332.
