Detectives were trying to find out who fired shots in four neighboring communities in Islip Town and whether those incidents are related, Suffolk police said Tuesday.

Shots were reported late Monday night into Tuesday outside homes in Great River, North Great River and East Islip, police said.

In Islip Terrace, a car was fired upon, police said.

Police are looking into the number of bullets fired.

A police spokesman said he did not have details on any damage to the car and homes, and whether spent cartridges were found. He also did not have details on when the first shooting was reported.

The shootings prompted the East Islip school district to keep its students inside during the school day Tuesday as a precautionary measure, a district spokeswoman said.

It was unclear whether the shootings were connected to a homicide Monday night in Central Islip. Two men were shot just before 10 p.m. in a dispute that started with uninvited guests to a party, police said. One man died from his wounds, while another was taken to the hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
