A young Southold woman was intoxicated and was texting while driving when her car went off the road in Southold less than an hour into the new year, police said Wednesday.

Cristina Maria Madison, 21, was awaiting arraignment later Wednesday in Southold Town Justice Court on a misdemeanor charge of driving while intoxicated, the Southold Town police said in a statement.

The woman was driving south on Main Bayview Road about 12:56 a.m. when her 2004 Volvo went off the road "due to the fact [she] was 'texting' while she was driving," the police statement said.

The Volvo struck four mailboxes and two large trees before it came to a stop, police said.

Police said she was treated at Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport and released to police custody.
