A Holbrook man robbed a Ralph's Italian Ices store Friday night, then eluded police for more than an hour before he was apprehended by a Suffolk County canine officer and his dog while hiding under a pool deck, authorities said.
Christopher Ventrice, 31, entered the Ralph's store at 1191 Grundy Ave. in Holbrook about 10 p.m., told an employee he had a gun and demanded cash, police said. Ventrice then fled on foot.
Officers from the Fifth Precinct, along with members of the canine and aviation bureaus, searched for the suspect.
Daniel Hogan, an officer with the Fifth Precinct, spotted a man who fit Ventrice's description on Maria Court in Holbrook, police said. When Hogan approached the man, the suspect got off his bicycle and fled into a nearby backyard, police said.
Canine Officer Stephen McSweeney and his dog, McClane, found Ventrice hiding under a pool deck at a home on Maria Court about 11:10 p.m., and he was arrested, police said.
Ventrice had made off with more than $250, which was recovered when he was arrested, police said. He did not have a gun on him at the time of the arrest, according to police.
He was arraigned Saturday on a charge of first-degree robbery at First District Court in Central Islip.
