A Riverhead man died in a construction accident in East Quogue after a hill on which he was standing collapsed and buried him under mulch and dirt, Southampton Town police said.

Declan Boland, 50, fell into a trench Friday afternoon at 41 Lewis Road, also known as East Coast Mines, at about 1:10 p.m. Friday.

Boland fell under the mound of dirt and mulch after a fire had started on a hill and workers had responded to put out the fire, officials said.

Southampton Town Police, the Suffolk Sheriff's K-9 Unit, East Quogue Fire Department and Ambulance, Westhampton Ambulance, and Hampton Bays Fire Department responded to the scene.

Boland was pulled out of the dirt by police and several workers on site, and he was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, where he was pronounced dead, town police said.

Southampton Town detectives and the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration officials are investigating, police said. Anyone with information is asked to call detectives at 631-702-2230.
