Police are searching for three suspects who pistol-whipped a man on a street in Riverhead Thursday night, robbing him and stealing his sport utility vehicle.

The SUV, a 2003 Chevrolet Suburban, was later recovered, Riverhead Town police said.

Police said the victim, identified only as a 48-year-old man from Riverhead, said two of the suspects attacked him on Hamilton Avenue at 7:38 p.m., pistol-whipping him and stealing cash, while a third suspect stole the victim's Suburban from a municipal lot across from the Riverhead Fire House Annex.

Officers and a canine team recovered evidence, police said, though police declined to detail what type of evidence was recovered by investigators.
