School shooting drill at Connetquot HS

Student volunteers helped more than 50 police officers train to handle school shooting scenarios on Feb. 23, 2013. The "active shooter" drill was run by Suffolk police and held at Connetquot High School in Bohemia. The smiling students weren't scared and guns used in the drill were fake, but organizers said it was an important opportunity to practice tactics. "In a real-life scenario, you automatically go back to that training," says Suffolk police Officer Matthew DeMatteo, who participated in the exercise.

Using fake guns, police officers practice scanning for a mock suspect in a crowd of fleeing students, who voluteered to help add realism to a police drill at Connetquot High School. "This particular drill today is to train our officers how to deal tactically with an active shooter situation," says Suffolk police Insp. Aristides Mojica, who helped run the exercise. Referring to the Dec. 14, 2012, massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Mojica adds: "The Connecticut event was a very stark reminder of how important it is for our officers to receive the proper tactical training."
