Shirley woman killed in Southampton crash
A 29-year-old Shirley woman was killed Thursday when her sport utility vehicle veered into oncoming traffic on Sunrise Highway in Southampton and collided with a bus, police said.
Carissa Castillo, a mother of two, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Southampton police.
Castillo was eastbound on the highway shortly after 7 a.m. when her 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer struck the westbound Hampton Jitney bus head-on near St. Andrews Road, police said.
Two people were on the bus. The driver, George Scheld, 54, of Nesconset, was treated and released, but an attendant suffered a fractured leg, according to Hampton Jitney co-owner Geoffrey Lynch.
The injured employee was identified by police as Shimona Kameka, 36, of Southampton.
The crash littered the highway, also known as County Road 39, with debris and caused a major traffic jam.
Westbound lanes, closed in Southampton for about nine hours during the investigation, reopened shortly before 4 p.m., police said.
The bus involved in the accident was headed to Manhattan to pick up passengers, Lynch said.
Detectives are asking anyone who may have witnessed the accident to call Southampton police at 631-702-2238.
